Atlanta Tree Ordinance – Within the city limits
The Arborist Division is charged with protecting the City’s tree canopy on private property throughout the City of Atlanta. Protecting and permitting the removal of trees can be done either under a building permit or through an application to remove a dead, dying, diseased, or hazardous tree.

ANY specimen tree over 6″
Exception: mimosa, tree of heaven, bradfords, nuisance trees >12″ need a permit
Exception: trees within structural root area (limited to one tree within 5’ per 5 years)
Permitted trees include, dead/dying, hazardous, or in the way of a permitted construction project, or where structural root plate is affected. You will need to create a username and password to submit an online application for permit on the City of Atlanta’s Citizen’s Gateway. Permits to remove, destroy, or injure trees MUST be posted for public inspection
